Dover to Calais ferry: crossing time, operators, prices & tips
The 34-kilometre hop from Dover to Calais is the busiest short sea crossing in the world and the classic gateway between England and mainland Europe. Here is everything you need to book the right sailing at the right price.
How long is the Dover to Calais crossing?
The crossing takes about 90 minutes port to port. With check-in and disembarkation, allow roughly two and a half hours from arriving at the Port of Dover to driving away in Calais.
Because sailings run through the day and night, Dover–Calais is effectively a rolling shuttle: if you miss one boat, the next is rarely more than an hour away.
Who sails Dover to Calais?
Three operators share the route: P&O Ferries, DFDS and Irish Ferries. Between them they run up to around 50 sailings a day in peak season, which is why fares stay competitive and flexibility is easy.
All three carry cars, motorhomes, caravans and motorcycles. Dover–Calais is a vehicle route — foot passengers are not carried, so if you are travelling without a car, take the train or a through-coach instead.
How much does the Dover to Calais ferry cost?
A short-notice car crossing can run to well over £100 each way in peak summer, while an off-peak midweek sailing booked ahead can be a fraction of that. Price is driven mainly by date, time of day and how far in advance you book.
To find the cheapest Dover–Calais fare, travel midweek or overnight, avoid Friday evenings and school holidays, and compare all three operators in one search rather than checking each site separately.
At the Port of Dover
The Eastern Docks sit right off the A20, well signposted from the M20/A20. Arrive within the check-in window on your ticket — usually 45 to 60 minutes before departure for cars — to clear ticket control, French border checks and security.
Since the introduction of tighter EU border checks, allow extra time at busy periods. Keep passports handy for everyone in the vehicle; every traveller is checked before boarding.
Arriving in Calais and driving on
Calais puts you straight onto the A16, with fast links south to Paris, east to Belgium and the Netherlands, and the Channel coast in either direction. Reims, Bruges and Lille are all comfortable same-day drives.
Remember to switch to driving on the right, carry the mandatory kit for France (warning triangle, hi-vis vests, headlamp beam deflectors) and check low-emission-zone rules if you are heading into larger cities.
