First time on a ferry? A step-by-step guide

Never taken a ferry before? It is genuinely easy. Here is the whole journey, step by step, so you know exactly what happens and when.

1. Book and prepare

Search your route and date, choose a sailing, and add any vehicle, cabin or meals. You will get a booking reference by email — that is your ticket.

Check the check-in deadline and what ID you need. For international crossings, carry the same travel documents you would for a flight.

2. Arrive and check in

Arrive within the check-in window. Foot passengers head to the terminal; drivers follow signs to vehicle check-in, where you show your reference and are given a boarding card and lane.

There is no lengthy security like an airport, but do have your documents ready.

3. Board, sail and arrive

When your lane is called, drive on or walk up the gangway as directed. Once on board, find your seat, cabin or a spot on deck and enjoy the crossing.

Before arrival there will be an announcement to return to your vehicle or gather your things. Then simply drive or walk off — no baggage carousel required.
