Helsinki to Tallinn ferry: times, operators and day trips

Barely 80 kilometres of the Gulf of Finland separate two Baltic capitals, and ferries cross it dozens of times a day. Helsinki to Tallinn is one of Europe's easiest — and most popular — international ferry trips.

How long does Helsinki to Tallinn take?

Modern fast ferries make the crossing in about two to two and a half hours. Departures run from early morning to late evening, so a day trip with several hours in Tallinn's old town is comfortably doable.

In peak summer the combined timetable can offer close to twenty sailings a day, making this feel more like a shuttle than an international voyage.

Which ferry companies sail the route?

Three operators serve Helsinki–Tallinn: Tallink Silja, Viking Line and Eckerö Line. All carry both foot passengers and vehicles, and all run large ships with cafés, restaurants, shops and sun decks.

Because capacity is high and competition keen, fares are reasonable and it is well worth comparing operators and departure times in a single search.

Foot passengers vs taking a car

Most visitors travel as foot passengers — the terminals are close to both city centres, so you can walk or take a short tram ride at each end. Helsinki sailings leave from the West Harbour (Länsisatama); Tallinn ferries use the D-Terminal, a short walk from the old town.

If you are touring the Baltics by car or campervan, vehicle space is easy to book too. Prices rise with vehicle size, so measure roof boxes and bike racks before you book.

Making the most of a day trip

Take an early sailing to Tallinn, spend the day exploring the UNESCO-listed medieval old town, and return on an evening boat. Bring a passport or national ID card — this is a crossing between two countries.

Tallinn is noticeably cheaper than Helsinki, which is why the route is popular for shopping as well as sightseeing. Cabins are available on some sailings if you would rather travel overnight.
